edgar

Last night I heard something that I've never heard in my life, and likely will hear very few times in the years to come. It was a recital by the world's undisputed leading bassist, Edgar Meyer. It was unbelievable. I had seen him on TV and heard recordings, but I've never seen anyone play a bass that beautifully live.

The first half of the evening was composed of some repertoire standards (mostly transcriptions, of course). He played (among other things) a very touching portion of Bloch's Suite Hebraique, and the Eccles A minor sonata (and unless I'm crazy, I think it was supposed to have been in G minor. but whatever.) He rounded off the first portion with a breathtaking performance of Kreisler's (he was a violinist) showpiece, Tambourin Chinois.

The second half was all his own works. He's not real big on titles, but he can be creative with them every now and then. Besides "untiled #1 and #2", there was "The Great Green Sea-Snake" and "Please don't feed the bear."

Overall, it's one of the best concerts I've ever heard in my life. I think everyone else that was in attendance would concur.

lindz got to see him last week as well...in a weird random concert- just he and a pianist on a high school stage in salida, CO...with most of the people there not knowing who he was. still cool though...so between, we've seen the whole "appalachia" group- I've seen O'Connor and Yo Yo, and she's seen Edgar Meyer. Very nice.
